Celebrating National Breastfeeding Week 2024

When emergency medical technicians respond during a blizzard to a house where a mother has just given birth, where do they put the newborn for transport through the storm to the hospital? For one team of emergency responders from a Baby Friendly facility, the answer was skin-to-skin on the mother’s body — all the way to the hospital, where the pair arrived safe and sound, with baby’s temperature stable despite the cold winter night. Baby Friendly facilities facilitate immediate, uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact and support mothers to breastfeed as soon as possible after birth. It’s one of the most important ways Baby Friendly facilities help families get a great start — even if that start involves some unplanned circumstances!
