World Breastfeeding Week
Breastfeeding Courses
Volunteers Needed
Community of Practice
Halton region is joining
over 150 countries worldwide by celebrating World
Breastfeeding Week October 1-7th. This
week endorsed by the United Nations Children's
Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization
(WHO) as well as numerous professional agencies
highlights the need for protection and support
of safe infant feeding in emergencies.
Emergencies can happen anywhere
in the world. Infants and young children are especially
vulnerable to malnutrition, illness, and death
in these situations. Whatever the emergency –from
earthquake to conflict, from floods to the flu
pandemic – the story is the same: breastfeeding
protects infants in emergencies.
When an emergency
strikes, simple measures can make all the difference
in the world. Emergency preparedness is the key
to quick appropriate actions. Mothers need to
be secure and have priority access to food for
the family, water, shelter and safe places to
breastfeed.
During the Week, the four
Halton hospitals, public health nurses and midwives
will provide “baby friendly” gift
bags to celebrate new births. New gift bags for
moms will consist of information about emergency
preparedness and breastfeeding, what “baby
friendly” means, disposable nursing pads
and hats/ booties knit by hospital volunteers.
As well, four events
will be held to celebrate this week at the following
locations and information displays will be at
the hospitals.
